NITRARIACEAE Lindl.

Family composed of 3 genera and 37 shrubby and herbaceous species, distributed mainly through dry, semiarid and arid areas of Central Asia, North Africa, S of Europe, eastern Mexico and southern Australia. In North Africa it is represented by 3 species of which one, N. retusa is shrubby, while Peganum harmala L. and Tetradiclis tenella (Ehrenb.) Litv. are herbaceous.
