Phoenix L.

Genus composed of 14 species, mainly distributed across Afro-Asian tropics and subtropics, from Macaronesia to the Philippines. In North Africa it is represented by a single species, P. dactylifera, of Saharan distribution. Widely cultivated since ancient times, now there are several million of these trees in the Saharan oases, but very few grow spontaneously.
