Genus composed of some 150 species with a cosmopolitan distribution, but especially well represented through the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. They are generally annual, biennial or perennial herbaceous plants but, of the 11 species that represent this genus in North Africa, only one species is a woody subshrub that reaches 60 cm in height (L. orientalis), found in desert areas.
