Genus composed of about 13 species in Africa, Asia and Australia. In North Africa there are 2 species, C. plicatum, a subshrub with woody stems and herbaceous branches, with a Saharan and subtropical distribution; and C. americanum, a herbaceous plant (see Observations). These species have been previously treated by many authors under the genus Psoralea together with Psoralea bituminous and P. flaccida, closely related perennial plants, up to 1 m in height and with a Mediterranean and North African distribution, currently in the genus Bituminaria Heist ex Fabr.
