POLYGALACEAE Hoffmanns. & Link

Family composed of about 30 genera and 1,200 species of trees, shrubs, herbs, and more rarely, woody lianas, widespread throughout almost the entire world. In North Africa it is only represented by two genera, Polygala Tourn. ex L. and Chamaebuxus Tourn. Only C. balansae (Coss.) Stapf could be considered shrubby, but five more species with slightly woody bases can also be cited from this genus.
