Arbuste ou petit arbre caducifoli\u00e9 et un peu \u00e9pineux, de jusqu\u2019\u00e0 8(10) m de haut, tr\u00e8s rameux. Chez de nombreux exemplaires, tronc bien d\u00e9fini, arborescent, \u00e0 \u00e9corce brun-noir\u00e2tre, rugueuse ou fendill\u00e9e. Rameaux oppos\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00e9corce brun-noir\u00e2tre, lisse. Ramilles brun-rouge\u00e2tre, fr\u00e9quemment termin\u00e9es en \u00e9pines. Feuilles (2-7 \u00d7 1-4 cm) oppos\u00e9es ou suboppos\u00e9es sur les jeunes ramilles ; dans le reste de la plante, elles naissent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement en petits groupes, parfois alternes, ov\u00e9es, obov\u00e9es ou ov\u00e9es-lanc\u00e9ol\u00e9es, parfois suborbiculaires, termin\u00e9es en pointe aigu\u00eb ou largement arrondie, plus ou moins att\u00e9nu\u00e9es \u00e0 la base, \u00e0 bord irr\u00e9guli\u00e8rement cr\u00e9nel\u00e9-dent\u00e9, 2-3 paires de nervures presque parall\u00e8les, glabres et de couleur vert vif sur l\u2019endroit, parfois pubescentes et un peu plus claires sur l\u2019envers. P\u00e9tiole bien d\u00e9velopp\u00e9, pubescent, \u00e0 stipules herbac\u00e9es promptement caduques. Inflorescences en cymes axillaires, tr\u00e8s nombreuses et si denses qu\u2019elles occultent habituellement la portion de ramille sur laquelle elles naissent. Fleurs verd\u00e2tre-jaun\u00e2tre, hermaphrodites, unisexu\u00e9es ou polygames, p\u00e9doncul\u00e9es. Calice tubuleux-campanul\u00e9, \u00e0 4 s\u00e9pales lanc\u00e9ol\u00e9s. P\u00e9tales : 4, tr\u00e8s petits, peu visibles.
