Arbre atteignant 20 m de haut, \u00e0 feuilles persistantes, dio\u00efque, \u00e0 tronc ramifi\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re dichotomique 1-4(8) fois, gris fonc\u00e9 mais pr\u00e9sentant des cicatrices bien marqu\u00e9es laiss\u00e9es par les feuilles en tombant en guise d\u2019anneaux. Feuilles group\u00e9es par 20-30, formant des houppes \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 des rameaux, \u00e0 limbe palm\u00e9 de pr\u00e8s de 1 m de large et 20-25 divisions, p\u00e9tiole aplani, canalicul\u00e9, pourvu d\u2019aiguillons \u00e9pais, r\u00e9trorses, sur toute sa longueur. Inflorescences en spadices de jusqu\u2019\u00e0 1,2 m de long, ramifi\u00e9s, avec chaque ramification entour\u00e9e \u00e0 la base d\u2019une spathe cylindrique et aigu\u00eb et plusieurs rac\u00e8mes digit\u00e9s pr\u00e9sentant chacun de nombreuses fleurs. Fleurs unisexu\u00e9es, jaune p\u00e2le ; les m\u00e2les \u00e0 p\u00e9rianthe compos\u00e9 de 2 verticilles de 3 pi\u00e8ces chacun, l\u2019interne trilob\u00e9 et l\u2019externe \u00e0 3 pi\u00e8ces libres et 6 \u00e9tamines ; les femelles \u00e0 p\u00e9rianthe compos\u00e9 de 2 verticilles de 3 pi\u00e8ces libres et 3 carpelles libres chacun, dont deux avortent avant la maturit\u00e9.
