Il s\u2019agit pour la plupart d\u2019esp\u00e8ces herbac\u00e9es ou de petits cham\u00e6phytes, souvent rampants. Certaines de ses esp\u00e8ces ont r\u00e9cemment \u00e9t\u00e9 assign\u00e9es au genre <em>Astracantha<\/em> en raison de leurs gousses petites, sessiles, incluses dans le calice tr\u00e8s villeux. <em>Astragalus <\/em>est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 par environ 80 esp\u00e8ces dans le N. de l\u2019Afrique, dont 14 end\u00e9miques du Maroc. Seulement 2 esp\u00e8ces, assez semblables, peuvent \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme des arbrisseaux, <strong>A. armatus<\/strong> et <strong>A. spinosus<\/strong>, \u00e0 tiges et rameaux ligneux, \u00e9pineux, de 20-60 cm de haut. D\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces, \u00e9pineuses ou non, nombre d\u2019entre elles herbac\u00e9es vivaces \u00e0 base ligneuse, ne d\u00e9passent habituellement pas 20-50 cm, bien que certaines pr\u00e9sentent des tiges herbac\u00e9es pouvant d\u00e9passer 1 m.
