Shrub, evergreen, hermaphrodite, up to 1.5 m in height. Stems branched from the base, with lanate lower part, with eglandular hairs and upper part with glandular indumentum. Leaves opposite, 2-5 cm, petiolate, with trilobed leaf blade, with central lobe much larger than the 2 lateral ones, tomentose, obtuse, crenulate, greenish on the upper side and greyish white on the underside. Inflorescence in lax spike of verticillasters, simple or branched; verticillasters with 4-8 flowers and bracteoles much shorter than the calyx, membranous, caducous. Flowers pedicellate, with pedicels 4-6 mm. Calyx 5-10 mm, campanulate, viscid, with glandular and eglandular hairs, and sessile glands. Corolla bilabiate, about 3 times longer than the calyx, pink-purple, blue-violet, pale lilac or sometimes white. In general, they are plants with woody stems, at least at the base (some, like L. multifida<\/em>, tend to be herbaceous). All of them can be divided into 2 groups, one with entire or dentate leaves, where the larger species are found, and another with deeply divided leaves, mainly herbaceous but \u00b1 woody, at least at the base of the stems of the oldest specimens. Another species with a wider distribution is L. multifida<\/strong> L., common in the western Mediterranean and in North Africa from Morocco to Egypt; up to 80(120) cm in height, with stems covered with whitish branched hairs and spikes simple or branched at the base, 1.5-8 cm long, with 7-15 verticillasters of 2 flowers each, with blue-violet corolla, the lower verticillaster sometimes distanced from others; found in rocky areas and grasslands in arid or semiarid zones. Very similar to this last species (so much so that it was considered a subspecies) is L. saharica<\/strong> Upson & Jury (L. antineae <\/em>f. stenonota <\/em>Maire), that in essence can be differentiated by its more open branchlets, that form a 45\u00b0 angle, and by having all segments of the leaf usually entire. It grows in central and eastern Sahara (Algeria, Libya, Chad, Egypt and Sudan).\r\n\r\nMorocco has a high diversity of species of this genus. As well as the species listed above, there are a further 4 endemic species with deeply divided leaves. L. maroccana<\/strong> Murb. and L. rejdalii<\/strong> Upson & Jury have densely tomentose stems, but without branched hairs, with short spikes and wide bracts, with an acuminate appendage in the former species, and longer spikes and ovate-lanceolate to ovate bracts and clearly acuminate appendage in the latter species; L. maroccana<\/em> grows in plains and low mountains of the Anti-Atlas, mid Atlantic Morocco and High Atlas; L. rejdalii<\/em> is only known from the region of Tafraout, in the Anti-Atlas. L. mairei<\/strong> Humbert and L. tenuisecta<\/strong> Ball both have glabrous or laxly tomentose stems, with the former reaching up to 1 m in height and with abundant glandular hairs and long spikes (2)4-9(15) cm, while the latter barely reaches 50 cm in height and presents few or no glandular hairs, and rather shorter spikes 2-4(6) cm long.\r\n\r\nL. multifida<\/em> is rare but widely distributed species. The other species have smaller distribution areas but in principle none are considered threatened. Another species, smaller in size but widely distributed, is M. inodora <\/strong>(Desf.) Benth. with woody stems but up to 30(40) cm in height, with leaves, linear and very small (less than 5 \u00d7 1 mm); a plant of Mediterranean thermophilic thickets, found in the region in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.\r\n\r\nA closely related genus to Micromeria<\/em> is Satureja<\/strong> L., to the point that they were often considered co-generic. They differ primarily in that, in Satureja<\/em>, the calyx is bilabiate or campanulate, with 10-13 veins and unequal teeth, while in Micromeria,<\/em> the calyx is cylindrical, with 10 veins and subequal teeth. Satureja<\/em> is the genus of savory, also with some resemblance to thyme (Thymus<\/em>), but with which should not be confused. They differ because the Satureja <\/em>calyx is glabrescent on the inside and its stamens are arched downwards, fused to the upper lip of the corolla, barely visible (while in thyme the calyx has a dense ring of hairs inside, and its stamens are straight, free and clearly visible). The savory usually flowers later, in July or August. Satureja<\/em> is composed of about 40 species of chamaephytes, herbaceous perennials and annuals, distributed mainly through Eurasia. In North Africa, numerous specific and infraspecific taxa have been described but current only 2 native species are accepted. S. salzmannii <\/strong>(Kuntze) P.W.Ball in Morocco, and S. thymbra <\/strong>L. in Libya. (Tamahaq<\/em>: Abhihawt) is a subshrub that can reach 60 cm in height, highly branched, stems with eglandular retrorse hairs, narrowly linear leaves, verticillasters of the inflorescence usually with 4 flowers and blue-violet corolla. It grows in the mountain ranges of central Sahara between Algeria, Libya and Chad (massifs of Ahaggar, Tibesti, etc.), in sandy or stony beds of wadis at 1,000-2,000 m in altitude.\r\n\r\nS. deserti<\/strong> Decne. (Ara<\/em>.: Shoheibi, ghobbeisha) is closely related to S. chudaei <\/em>but barely exceeds 30(40) cm in height, with leaves ovate-oblong, and verticillasters of the inflorescence usually with 8 flowers. It grows in wadis of the deserts of S Israel, Palestine, Saudi Arabia and the Sinai Peninsula.\r\n\r\nS. aegyptiaca<\/strong> L. (Ara<\/em>.: Ra\u2019alah. Tamahaq<\/em>: Safsaf) is a subshrub up to 20(40) cm in height, highly branched, with leaves up to 55 \u00d7 8 mm, linear-elliptic and serrate or crenate, flower calyx with abundant capitate glandular hairs and corolla c.<\/em> 8 mm, pale lilac. Its range extends from the Cape Verde Islands and the Canary Islands to the W and up to India to the E. This is the species of the genus with the greatest range in North Africa, found in arid or desert areas across all countries. <\/em>\r\n\r\nFairly common species and with variable distributions, in principle none are considered threatened. Currently, they have not been assessed at a global level in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species<\/em>.
