Tree, deciduous, hermaphrodite, slightly or not spiny, up to 15 m in height, \u00b1 oval in shape. Trunk well defined, straight, but somewhat tortuous, with greyish-brown bark, fissured longitudinally. Branches greyish, glabrous, with abundant lenticels, younger branches grey or reddish-brown and slightly hairy. Leaves (2-8 \u00d7 1.3-5 cm) alternate, solitary or grouped in fascicles, \u00b1 ovate, but can vary widely, from oblong to broadly oval or suborbicular, acute at the apex, cuneate, rounded or slightly heart-shaped at the base, margin dentate or serrulate-crenulate; glabrous, light green, slightly shiny on the upper side and matt on the underside. Petiole (1.3-5 cm) well developed, roughly the same length as the leaf. Inflorescence corymbiform, with floral peduncles 1.5-3 cm. Flowers 2.5-3 cm in diameter. In North Africa it is represented by 12 species, of which 1 is taxonomically doubtful (R. mesatlantica<\/em>), 3 more (R. montana<\/strong>, R. stylosa<\/strong> and R. abietina<\/strong>) are taxa with alpine distribution and therefore their presence on the African territory should probably be verified, and 7 microspecies that belong to the complex group of R.<\/strong> canina <\/strong>in a broad taxonomic sense. This is probably the most difficult genus to treat, even for specialists. Furthermore there is a relatively high number of species, with only slight differences, along with the problem of frequent hybridisations and introgressions.
