{"id":48015,"date":"2026-06-03T17:17:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T17:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.northafricatrees.org\/generos\/chamaebuxus-tourn\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T19:43:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T19:43:45","slug":"chamaebuxus-tourn","status":"publish","type":"genus","link":"https:\/\/www.northafricatrees.org\/en\/genuses\/chamaebuxus-tourn\/","title":{"rendered":"Chamaebuxus Tourn."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This genus comprises one species in North America and five in Europe and North Africa.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Its separation from <em>Polygala<\/em> is strongly supported by phylogenetic analyses (Pastore <em>et al<\/em>., 2019).<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><em>Chamaebuxus<\/em> Tourn., published in 1753 in the Encyclop\u00e9die de Diderot y D\u2019Alembert, takes priority over <em>Polygaloides<\/em> Haller.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In North Africa, it is represented by three more or less woody species.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>C. balansae<\/strong> is the most robust and the only one that can be considered more or less shrubby; the others are only slightly woody at the base of their stems.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>C. munbyana<\/strong> (Boiss. &amp; Reut.) Stapf [<em>Polygala munbyana<\/em> Boiss. &amp; Reut., <em>Polygaloides munbyana<\/em> (Boiss. &amp;<br \/>\nReut.) O. Schwarz], glabrescent, with quadrangular stems, shortly winged, and with flowers pink or yellow; endemic to the littoral and sublittoral mountains of NE Morocco (from littoral Bokkoyas towards the E) and the coastal mountains of central-western Algeria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C. webbiana<\/strong> (Coss.) Stapf [<em>Polygala webbiana <\/em>Coss., <em>Polygaloides webbiana <\/em>(Coss.) O. Schwarz], easily differentiated by its densely pubescent branchlets; present in southern Spain (Malaga) and NW Morocco (calcareous mountains of the western Rif and, although rarer, also in the Middle Atlas, in Bab Metik).<\/p>\n<p>In Algeria <em>C. munbyana <\/em>is included in the List of protected non cultivated flora (Executive Decree 12-03 on 4-Jan-2012).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","short_name":"Chamaebuxus","name_html":"<strong>Chamaebuxus<\/strong>Tourn.","short_description":"","references":"","custom_author":"A.
