Genus composed of 2,450 species, with SW Asia as its centre of diversity. Mostly they are herbaceous species or small chamaephytes, often creeping. Recently some species have been assigned to genus Astracantha <\/em>for their small pods, sessile and shorter than the very hairy calyx. Astragalus<\/em> is represented in North Africa by about 80 species, 14 species endemic to Morocco. Only 2 quite similar species can be considered subshrubs, Astragalus armatus<\/strong> and A. spinosus<\/strong>, with woody branches and stems, spiny, 20-60 cm in height. Other species, with or without spines, many herbaceous and perennial with a woody base, do not usually exceed 30-50 cm in height, although some have erect herbaceous stems that can exceed 1 m.
