Cosmopolitan Distribution. In North Africa there are some subshrubs with branchlets up to 50(60) cm in height, always pentamerous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Silene fruticosa <\/strong>L., with obovate-spatulate basal leaves, lanceolate upper leaves, and showy flowers with extended petals, pinkish or reddish, about 3 cm, grows in rocky areas in the eastern Mediterranean, in the coastal regions of Libya (<em>S. fruticosa<\/em> subsp. <em>cyrenaica<\/em> B\u00e9g. &amp; A.Vacc.) and Egypt (<em>S. fruticosa<\/em> L. subsp. <em>fruticosa<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sphaerocoma hookeri <\/strong>T. Anderson (<em>Ara<\/em>.: Hanboak), with linear leaves and minute flowers grouped in dense spinescent capitula, white petals, shorter than the sepals; it grows from NE Africa (coastal and subcoastal regions of Egypt and Sudan) up to Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>These subshrubs are beginning to be threatened in North Africa by the increasing urbanisation of coastal regions of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. In the Red List of vascular plants of Egypt (<em>Flora Aegyptiaca <\/em>Vol 1, 2000) <em>S. fruticosa<\/em> is listed as \u201cRare\u201d and <em>S. hookeri<\/em> as \u201cVulnerable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But the family has a genus with a more robust species, up to 80 cm in height, it is <strong>Gymnocarpos.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","name_html":"<strong>CARYOPHYLLACEAE <\/strong>Juss.","short_name":"CARYOPHYLLACEAE","short_description":"","references":"","custom_author":"G.
